DDA reports downtown beautification plans; council approves free August amphitheater concert

At the July 9 meeting Michael Crump presented a Main Street/Downtown Development Authority update to the Royston City Council, describing downtown beautification and a slate of free community events.
Crump said the DDA plans a lamp-pole recognition program that allows people to honor veterans for about $100 per pole order, has ordered LED wrap lights for downtown posts, and is preparing event plans for concerts: a free community concert on Aug. 13 and a concert listed in the minutes as Aug. 31 described as occurring on Labor Day weekend. The minutes record Crump saying Fall Festival applications were updated and would be circulated soon. Mayor Keith Turman and Mayor Pro-Tem Jason Phillips thanked the DDA and staff for event coordination and vendor relations.
The council also considered an amphitheater use application from Encounter Church. John Phillips told the council the weRcalled Christian family group from Arkansas could perform at no charge to the community and that food trucks (Chick-fil-A and Pelicans of Hartwell) were expected. Michael Crump advised that the non-profit rental rate is $500, that the event was not expected to require off-duty police officers, and that available restrooms and stage lighting would be used. Councilman Kenneth Roach moved to approve the amphitheater rental at the wellness park for the Encounter Church concert; Councilman Matt Fields seconded and the motion carried 6-0.
Separately, Mayor Turman presented Bobby Berryman with a key to the city, recognizing approximately 30 years of service as a chaplain supporting the police department and county programs.
