Woodbury County approves FY2027 budget and sets elected-official wages after debate; motion passes 3–1

The Woodbury County Board of Supervisors adopted the county’s FY2027 budget and approved a separate resolution setting salaries for elected officials after extended discussion and public comment.
The compensation board had recommended larger increases: a 4.5% raise for the auditor and treasurer, a 6.5% raise for the county attorney, and a 4% raise for supervisors plus a $3,500 chair stipend increase. Treasurer Tina Bertsch urged the board to honor the compensation board’s 4.5% recommendation for the treasurer, saying that recommendation “puts that position at just under $119,000” and reflected thorough comparables and volunteer work by the compensation board.
Board members weighed maintaining parity with the county wage plan against recruiting concerns for supervisory offices. After discussion, the board approved an option that set the auditor at 3%, the county attorney at 3%, the treasurer at 3%, supervisors’ base pay at 1% and raised the chair stipend by $3,500 to a total of $7,000. The motion passed 3–1, with Supervisor Ung recorded as opposed.
The board also adopted the FY2027 budget and accompanying resolution; members noted the levy has not increased in 12 years and has declined in recent years. Supervisors instructed staff to incorporate the wage changes into the submitted budget documents and to make technical adjustments prior to submission to the Department of Management.
