Saint Peter board approves $100,000 FY27 budget target, principal’s contract, substitute rates and multiple policies

At its Feb. 18 meeting, the Saint Peter Public Schools board approved a $100,000 FY27 budget adjustment target, ratified the Principal’s Master Agreement, set updated substitute rates and approved several district policies; the board also accepted donations and a foundation grant.
Board Chair Charlie Potts convened the Saint Peter Public Schools Board of Education on Feb. 18, 2026, and the board approved a package of administrative items that the district said align with budget planning and routine policy review.
On motions during the meeting, the board approved a $100,000 Budget Adjustment Target for fiscal year 2027, ratified changes to the Principal’s Master Agreement, and set updated substitute pay rates for teachers, paraprofessionals, custodians, food service staff and nurses. Business Manager Megan Gracia told the board the Business Committee recommended the budget target; the board approved it on a motion by Kate Martens, seconded by Drew Dixon.
The board also approved, by single reading, Policies 701, 701.1, 701.2, 702, 703, 705, 706.1, 720 and 723 after Superintendent Jon Graff said the policies were reviewed as part of the district’s regular cycle and contained minor or no changes. As an information item, the Policy Committee recommended dropping Policy 702.1 (Procurement Practices), noting its content duplicates material in Policy 721; that proposal was presented as a first reading for future action.
The board accepted donations from Paul and Avis McDaniel and Paul and Diane Huso and a grant from the Carl and Verna Schmidt Foundation; the donations resolution passed by roll call with Chair Charlie Potts and board members Bill Kautt, Drew Dixon and Kate Martens voting yes and three members absent. Earlier in the meeting the consent agenda, approved on a motion by Bill Kautt and seconded by Kate Martens, included approval of bills and wire transfers totaling $7,329,678.83 for January 2026, and several personnel items including resignations, new hires and an acknowledged FMLA leave request.
Superintendent Jon Graff reported school and staff activities across the district: Early Childhood noted a School Readiness Open House and ongoing preschool registration; South Elementary reported that a Read-a-Thon raised $8,543.25; North Elementary highlighted upcoming Arts and Academic Night and other events; and Saint Peter High School noted that Bri Bergstrom received the Minnesota Music Educators Association 2026 High School Music Educator of the Year Award. Graff said he will participate in professional development through the Minnesota Rural Education Association and the Minnesota Association of School Administrators and, with Operations and Maintenance Supervisor Seth Putz, will attend facilities management sessions at the South Central Service Cooperative.
The board reviewed its upcoming calendar of meetings and adjourned at 5:48 PM.
