Council votes 3–1 to table election of Richmond Hill Mayor Pro-Tem
Summary
At the Jan. 6 meeting the council voted 3–1 to table the election and swearing-in of a Mayor Pro-Tem until the next meeting. Councilmember Van Hunter opposed the motion after noting guidance from the City Attorney about timing.
Councilmember Kevin P. Bowes moved to table the election and swearing-in of a Mayor Pro-Tem to the next meeting; Councilmember Cindy Hatala seconded. The motion carried 3–1, with Councilmembers Hatala, Bowes and Steve Scholar voting in favor and Councilmember Van Hunter opposed.
During the discussion, Councilmember Hunter relayed guidance from the City Attorney that, while city protocol calls for the Mayor Pro-Tem election to take place at the first January meeting after a general election, the City Attorney confirmed the council retains the legal authority to postpone the vote. The minutes record Hunter’s statement about the attorney’s guidance but do not quote the attorney directly.
The council did not elect a Mayor Pro-Tem at the Jan. 6 meeting; the matter will be scheduled for a future council meeting.
