Mendham Environmental Commission urges long-term reforestation plan, recommends NRI/ERI

Kriss Replogle, chair of the Mendham Environmental Commission, presented a research-backed overview of the Township's forest canopy health and a proposed reforestation strategy.
The commission compiled a 49-page report drawing on U.S. Forest Service, NJDEP and Rutgers data that identified several challenges to forest resilience, including limited understory regeneration, invasive species, deer over-browsing, the emerald ash borer and shifting species composition toward less resilient trees. Replogle emphasized that successful reforestation typically relies on planting multiple saplings and planning for long-term sustainability rather than replacing mature trees with single large plantings.
The commission recommended developing a Natural Resources Inventory (NRI) to consolidate available environmental data and later producing an Environmental Resource Inventory (ERI) to interpret priorities such as critical habitats, wildfire risks and conservation areas. The effort may include outside consultants and potential Highlands Council funding; committee members noted possible needs for GIS licensing and budget requests in future years.
The presentation was offered to inform updates to the Township tree ordinance and the master plan; the Tree Committee plans to make a presentation at a future meeting.
