Soccer club reports roughly 700 registrants; irrigation permits advancing and safety concerns raised

Representatives of youth sports organizations told the Charlestown Township Parks & Recreation Board on April 16 that activity at Charlestown Park will be heavy this spring and summer and that some infrastructure and safety issues need attention.
Mike McGeehin, speaking for PASC, said the Spring 2026 soccer recreation season began April 11 and is scheduled to end June 6, and that the club has "approximately 700 children (3 years old to 18 years old)" registered for the season. He said the club will be attentive to parking on busy Saturdays. McGeehin also reported the Township Permit Coordinator confirmed that two of three necessary permits have been approved for development of an irrigation well and irrigation system; the club is working with the pump and well company on the required Chester County Health Department permit.
Jim O’Brien, reporting for PYMC, said Girls Flag Football is being held at Charlestown Park for the first time this spring. O’Brien raised safety concerns about several picnic benches that have loose planks and nails or screws sticking up near the playing fields and suggested the township consider replacing benches with ones similar to those used by Kimberton Youth Athletic League. He also asked whether the township plans to install security cameras covering the clubhouse and the press box.
Don Kaczmar, representing the GV Mountain Biking Team, asked to confirm park use for a New Riders Camp in July and said the team plans additional rides, including a late‑season schedule; he emphasized that riders use headlights on bikes and helmets as a safety measure when daylight is limited.
Board members did not take formal action at the meeting on these items but asked that staff and the Township Manager follow up on maintenance and permitting updates.
