MSU Extension reviews local programs; director says she will step down

Ms. Julie Darnton, MSU Extension District 4 Director, presented the 2024 MSU Extension annual report to the Oscoda County Board on June 9. Darnton said Extension is expanding senior services such as fall‑prevention Tai Chi and partnering with NEMCSA on A Matter of Balance. She described outreach for rural mental health support for farmers and educational work with MSU AgBioResearch and 4‑H on pest management, farm profitability and specialty crops.
Darnton told the board that Mio’s student nutrition program was cut because of federal budget constraints and that efforts are underway to restore in‑person Tai Chi classes for seniors. She also announced she is leaving her role as district director and that a replacement will be named soon.
Commissioners acknowledged the report and noted the importance of Extension work for local agriculture and youth programs. No formal board action was taken on county funding during the presentation.
