At the Oct. 10 meeting of the School Board of ISD #36 (Kelliher Public School District), board member Mary Thayer raised concerns about the NextLevel curriculum and asked the board to take immediate steps to review the materials.
The board directed a curriculum review committee to meet to examine the content, instructed administration to contact the curriculum company, the National PBIS representative and the publisher for clarification, and suspended teaching of the story portion of NextLevel student workbooks pending the committee’s review. The minutes record no vote count beyond a notation that actions discussed at Directors’ Forum moved forward with the committee process.
Board members and administration framed the step as a temporary measure to allow for committee review and vendor consultation rather than a permanent ban on the material. The minutes do not record curriculum excerpts or detailed objections; they note only that the story portion will be suspended while the review occurs.
