The Port Wentworth City Council on Sept. 19 adopted amendments to its parking ordinance that change enforcement to an odd‑even approach and revise rules governing commercial vehicle parking in residential zones.
City Attorney Scott Robichaux told council the ordinance update addresses commercial vehicle residential parking by prohibiting commercial vehicles over 10,000 pounds in R‑1 zones unless the parcel is larger than three acres and the vehicle cannot be seen from the road; the rule does not permit comparable parking in R‑2, R‑3, R‑4 or R‑5. Robichaux also said the ordinance prohibits parking shipping containers on residential lots.
Mayor Pro‑Tem Gabrielle Nelson asked about the prior 'six‑wheel' rule. City Manager Steve Davis said the wheel‑count restriction was removed and the ordinance now limits commercial vehicle parking by weight and commercial application instead. The council approved the ordinance amendments unanimously.
The change aims to balance residents' use of on‑street and driveway space with neighborhood appearance and safety, while providing clearer enforcement language for city code officers. The ordinance was approved on second reading and will be enforced under the city's code enforcement procedures.
