Centerville students honored for regional art show; teacher emphasizes community role of art

An art teacher from Centerville High School brought students to the Centerville‑Abington Community Schools board meeting on June 24 to accept a traveling trophy and highlight student work accepted into a regional art show.
"Art shares the threads that help bind society together," the teacher said while presenting the trophy and several students, adding that Centerville had a strong year: "60% of our stuff we submitted this year made it in," compared with a typical acceptance rate of about 35–38 percent.
The board and meeting attendees applauded students who were introduced by the teacher: Ava Hawk, whose painting "Structure Mutism" won first place overall; Hannah Beaman (third place in fine craft for a potter's‑wheel piece); and Leona Beckett, who submitted a chalk pastel portrait. "To win first place overall is really special," the teacher said of Ava's award.
Board members offered brief congratulations and the group took photographs before returning to the regular agenda. The teacher noted the broader community and school support that sustain the arts program, and said that the trophy rotates among schools that win the annual show.
The recognition was ceremonial; no board action was required. The district will keep the traveling trophy on display while students continue to participate in regional arts opportunities.
