Truman to apply for DNR ReLeaf tree grant; council seeks League funding to write application

Troy Nemmers of Bolton & Menk told the Truman City Council on Oct. 6 that the city is in the priority area for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) ReLeaf Grant. With the expanded priority designation making the grant more competitive, Nemmers recommended applying for a community tree-planting grant and suggested applying to the League of Minnesota Cities for funds to pay for grant-writing assistance.
Councilor Ron Kelley moved and Councilor Chad Truax seconded a motion to move forward with the DNR ReLeaf application and to seek League funding to cover the cost of preparing the application. The motion passed with all ayes. The grant deadline is Oct. 27; awards are made next spring and, if awarded, grant funds must be used within one year. Nemmers estimated the grant could fund removal and replacement of around 50 trees in the community.
What happens next: Staff will proceed with the application; the city clerk will pursue a League funding request to finance grant-writing assistance so the submission can meet the Oct. 27 deadline.
