Truman approves lineman hire and directs posting for maintenance position as snow truck reserve is discussed

The Truman City Council unanimously approved hiring Tucker Grathwohl for the lineman position at the recommendation of Public Works Superintendent Brent Brown during its Aug. 18 meeting. Brown recommended offering the position at step 3 based on the applicant’s schooling and experience; the motion to hire was made by Councilor Ron Kelley and seconded by Councilor Chad Truax.
Brown asked that the public works maintenance position be posted soon so a new hire can be trained in the street department; he said the forthcoming job posting will include minimum qualifications and a maximum allowed distance from Truman for emergency response. A second snowplow quote is still pending.
On budget planning, Brown said staff have been unable to find a used snow truck within the amount currently budgeted and proposed rolling the unused $10,000 into a reserve and, if feasible, increasing that reserve to between $20,000 and $40,000 for 2026. The council discussed continuing to seek a used truck and to revisit the levy and small cities assistance as possible funding strategies.
Brown also recommended replacing lighting with LEDs in the clinic and dentist offices at an estimated cost of $3,400, offset by an estimated $1,500 Heartland grant. Council did not finalize capital approvals at the meeting and asked for further discussion in September.
