Coffey County Commission approves software, vehicle and pipe purchases

On the recommendation of IT Director Brad Shymire, commissioners waived competitive bidding and approved a one-year Microsoft Office subscription from Central Computer Distribution for $42,400 to be paid from the 2025 technology training and equipment line item. The motion passed 5-0.
Road and Bridge Supervisor Adam Hope described a long-running equipment-replacement plan and said the department was “so far behind on our equipment” that it needed to accelerate replacements to avoid higher repair costs. The commission accepted a bid from Croati/Cromodi Chevrolet to purchase three 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD work trucks (total purchase price shown in the packet as $158,625) and one 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 work truck (purchase price $48,630). Commissioners discussed trade-in versus local auction for older vehicles and directed staff to pursue a disposal method that maximizes return to taxpayers. Both vehicle motions passed on voice votes recorded as unanimous.
The commission also awarded assorted culvert and drainage pipe purchases to Welburn Sales Inc. as the best bid, for $74,421.95 to be paid from the road and bridge fund. The motion passed with no recorded opposition.
Separately, the commission approved payment application No. 25 from River City Construction LLC for work on the Coffey County Law Enforcement Center project; the packet indicates an approved amount of approximately $17,314.87 to be charged to the jail construction project fund (Fund 111). That motion passed 5-0.
Funding sources and line-item references were read into the record for each purchase; commissioners affirmed that the vehicle purchases are being paid from the general fund public works equipment line item. The meeting record shows no roll-call votes for individual commissioners on these items—motions were adopted on unanimous voice votes.
The county expects to take delivery of the vehicles in summer 2026, subject to vendor delays noted during discussion. Staff were directed to finalize disposal paperwork for trade-ins or local auction and to return any required updates to the commission if sale terms change.
