Commissioners waive landfill fees for Waverly house damaged by fire

At the March 9 meeting the Coffey County commission approved a request to waive landfill fees for demolition debris from a house fire at 202 Senior Street in Waverly.
County staffer Lindsay described the property as a rental home owned by Terry Bradley and said interior damage was significant. She reported the owner carries insurance and does not plan to rebuild on the parcel. Commissioners discussed the local practice and the request and then voted to waive landfill fees related to demolition of the structure. The motion passed unanimously.
Commissioners and staff said the waiver is intended to remove a financial barrier to clearing a fire-damaged property that will remain vacant; normal permitting and documentation requirements will still apply.
The chairman directed staff to process the waiver and return any required paperwork to the clerk’s office.
