Commission previews Vision Zero crash dashboard after year‑in‑review showing clusters of serious crashes downtown

Staff presented a year‑in‑review crash report and a preview of an interactive Vision Zero dashboard that will allow commissioners and the public to filter crashes by mode, severity, time of day and commission district.

Katie (Presenter) told the commission the dataset covers 2019–2024 and shows more than 5,000 crashes for the review period, with roughly 14 crashes per day on average. Staff said the dashboard marks fatal crashes with larger red dots and maps hotspots of serious and fatal incidents concentrated near downtown and campus areas.

The dashboard demonstration included drill‑downs on individual crashes (date, lighting, weather, county ownership) and time‑of‑day charts. Staff showed filters for bike‑related and pedestrian‑related crashes and said the tool can display the high‑injury network, school locations and other layers. They emphasized the dashboard is intended to inform safety priorities and public conversations about countermeasures.

Staff also noted data‑quality work remains: several known fatal crashes were missing from the current dashboard dataset, and the team is reconciling police reports and other feeds before the public release. Katie said the platform still requires a login during internal review; staff plan a public launch with how‑to guidance and a short walk‑through video.

The commission discussed next steps, including giving staff additional time to correct records, scheduling demonstrations for commissioners and planning a public rollout once data gaps are resolved. The meeting closed with a request for staff to share the dashboard link and for small‑group walkthroughs before the public launch.
