Bennet council adopts SS4A safety plan and eyes grants to fund work

The Bennet City Council on Jan. 19 adopted Resolution 2026-1.1 approving the city’s final Safety Action Plan under the federal SS4A program.
Kyle McLaughlin presented the final report and told the council the plan identifies safety projects and potential grant opportunities to pay for implementation. Council Member Pete Simmons moved to adopt the plan; Council Member Dan Zieg seconded the motion, and the resolution passed with a roll-call vote of yes from Jesse Schmidt, Pete Simmons, Dan Zieg and Josh Buck.
The plan’s adoption puts the city in a position to apply for SS4A and other grants, officials said during the meeting. Council members discussed the need to prioritize projects within the plan before seeking outside funding and asked staff to explore grant timelines and matching-fund requirements.
As part of the same discussion, City Engineer Brian Schuele introduced a conceptual plan for a concrete parking lot at the east side of the T‑ball field. Council members treated that as a separate planning item to be refined later; no construction authorization or budget was approved at the meeting.
The council returned to open session after a closed-door portion later in the evening and adjourned at 8:44 p.m.
