Walnut Grove City Council accepts 2024 audit, authorizes land sale and approves routine measures

At a June 23 special meeting the Walnut Grove City Council unanimously accepted the 2024 audit presented by auditor Sara Oberloh, authorized a sale of city property west of the Bar & Grill and approved several routine items including a trespass extension and a personnel posting.
The Walnut Grove City Council unanimously voted Monday to accept the city’s 2024 audit, authorize the sale of a small parcel west of the Bar & Grill and approve a series of routine business and safety measures, the council said at a special meeting June 23 at the city office council room.
Auditor Sara Oberloh of Oberloh & Oberloh, LTD presented the audit. Oberloh reported the city’s Net Position rose $72,128 from the prior year while combined governmental fund balances decreased $43,284 to $2,316,262. The unassigned general fund balance stood at $426,439, or 65% of next year’s budgeted expenditures. The Bar & Grill Fund posted an operating profit of $21,426 after $15,349 in depreciation, and the Senior Housing Fund now owes the general fund $918,000 after a $175,000 transfer to cover principal, interest and repairs. The city ended 2024 with $2,790,000 in outstanding debt, a $330,000 decrease from the prior year.
Councilmember Dale Shannon moved to accept the audit as presented; Sue West seconded and the motion carried with all five councilmembers voting in favor. Mayor Ron Stubbe presided. Auditor Oberloh’s presentation preceded council action to approve several additional agenda items.
On a separate vote the council approved Resolution 2025-0623 authorizing the sale of the west 20 feet of Lot 2, Block 10 (the parcel immediately west of the Bar & Grill) and approved a corresponding quit-claim deed. Councilmember Dylan Albertson moved both measures and they passed unanimously.
The council also approved several routine items affecting the Bar & Grill and community programs: Beth Bjorklund’s request to participate in Redwood County’s LINC program (cost $550) was approved; the purchase of a two-door outdoor merchandiser for the Bar & Grill at an approximate cost of $4,200 was approved; and the council voted to post the Bar & Grill manager position in local newspapers and on Facebook after manager Kate Knakmuhs said she expects to step down around the end of July.
Police Chief Graham briefed the council on a June 10 incident in which a customer left without paying for an item. A temporary 30-day trespass notice had been served; the council voted to extend the trespass notice to 90 days, making the expiration date Sept. 11, 2025.
