Council weighs Naloxbox for town: locations, security and maintenance discussed

Council member Sherry briefed the Kirkland Town Council on May 11 about a proposal to install a self‑serve naloxone dispenser (commonly called a Naloxbox) in town to increase access to the opioid antidote.
"The proposed is that you can put one here in town it would be a self‑serve," Sherry said, describing how similar boxes in neighboring towns are placed at fire departments, parks and community centers and are restocked by regional partners.
Council members discussed candidate locations — town hall, a neighborhood center (Old Stoney), park areas and corner posts — and debated security. Several members said they were hesitant to place a box in the park until cameras or other anti‑vandalism measures are installed; the fire department was ruled out by council members for operational reasons. Healthy Communities and a local coalition would handle restocking and supply management, and the council noted that a local contact could notify the coalition when replenishment is needed.
Members agreed to consider options and return the matter to a future meeting for a formal decision on number and placement of boxes, potential costs and any needed infrastructure such as cameras or sheltered mounting.
