Kirkland council weighs public Narcan kiosk and where to place it

A council member introduced a proposal at the May 11 meeting to place a self‑serve Narcan dispensing box in Kirkland, stocked and serviced by Healthy Communities and intended to increase access to naloxone for overdose prevention.
The presenter said similar kiosks are located at town halls, neighborhood centers and parks in neighboring communities, and suggested locations in Kirkland could include the park, the town hall or a posted corner near the main intersection. “Healthy Communities would take care of filling it, and anytime a person needs a kit, they would be welcome to take it,” the presenter said.
Council members raised concerns about vandalism at the park and said they preferred sites with camera coverage. One council member said the fire department would not be a suitable location at this time; Shane, speaking for the outreach partner, emphasized the preventative aim: “The goal behind this was not to be reactive but to be more preventative with the Narcan so they can get it before they actually need it.”
No final site was chosen. Council agreed to table the item for further discussion and to return with suggested locations that provide security (camera coverage) or other protections against vandalism.
Next steps: staff will compile candidate locations, check logistics and identify sites with camera coverage; council will consider those options at a later meeting.
