The Walker City Council at its Sept. 3 meeting approved a slate of routine administrative and program items, including budget approvals, appointments, park permits and public works resolutions.
Council approved the City of Walker's share of the 2025 Kitchigami Regional Library operating budget and levy in the amount of $19,131 and reappointed Mary Beth Hansen and Char Moore as alternate appointees to the Kitchigami Regional Library Board. The council also approved a $1,000 donation to Walker Meals on Wheels and a $2,500 donation to Walker Youth Hockey.
Council appointed Charles Ramstad and Dylan Ramstad Skoyoles of Ramstad, Skoyles, Winters and Bakken, P.A. as primary and secondary city attorneys at a stated rate of $225.00 per hour. The council approved payment of several invoices and claims as part of the consent agenda, including $26,454.83 to Ulteig Operations for engineering services and $87,183.67 to Connect Interiors for library shelving product and installation.
On parks and recreation matters, the council approved the Park Advisory Board recommendation to allow the Walker Pickleball Club tournament to charge a $5 entry fee; the council clarified that the fee is to cover tournament administrative costs rather than payment to the City. The council also approved park use permits, allowed existing wind screens on new pickleball courts and directed that temporary courts not be used on the tennis court until additional research in Spring 2025.
In public works business the council approved three resolutions: Resolution 37-2024 (hearing on proposed assessment for the Northwest Area Project), Resolution 38-2024 (order preparation of report on West Side Project improvement) and Resolution 39-2024 (authorization to enter a cooperative agreement with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources for the Leech Lake Fishing Pier Project). All measures passed by unanimous roll call.
Council discussed a draft ordinance concerning location and access to water meters and agreed to hold a public hearing on the matter at the October City Council meeting. Mayor Worth announced Evergreen Cemetery clean-up after Sept. 17 and listed upcoming board and committee meeting dates. The meeting adjourned at 6:41 p.m.
