Pleasant Hill Optimist Club outlines youth support, seeks volunteers and donations

The Pleasant Hill Optimist Club presented to the City Council to outline its youth-focused programs and ask for community support.
Club president Reena McGawan told the council the group has been active in the area for decades and currently has about 15 members who partner with the school district, police and fire departments. "We are really the only youth organization supporting youth in the community," McGawan said, describing monthly Super Citizen recognitions in K–6 classrooms and hand-delivered food bags during the summer months.
Member Myra Da described the club's history running a summer food program from 2010 for eight years, at one point serving up to 100 children, and read the Optimist Creed that underpins the group's Super Citizen curriculum. McGawan said the club relies on a biannual circus fundraiser—supported by local businesses and occasional city assistance at the fairgrounds—to finance most activities.
During questions, staff and residents asked about donation logistics and membership. McGawan said the club can accept donations, coordinates drop-offs with partners and meets on the second Saturday of each month at 8:15 a.m. at Community Bank. She encouraged interested volunteers to attend meetings or contact the group via its social-media channels.
Council members thanked the presenters and noted the club's role in filling gaps not covered by other providers. The council took no formal action on the presentation.
