Lake Ridge to use Indiana Learns grant for tutoring; superintendent reports ~$1.5M vocational funding

The Lake Ridge New Tech Schools Board approved participation in the Indiana Learns Grant Program on Nov. 13, a move that will allow the district to provide tutoring to students who scored below proficiency on state assessments.
Cindy (identified in the meeting record) said Lake Ridge is one of 20 high schools statewide and one of three in Lake County approved for the program. She said the district currently has 394 eligible students; the grant provides $1,000 per eligible student, which the presenter estimated would amount to about $394,000 to support tutoring during and after school. The district will finalize eligibility criteria with the Indiana Learns team and post job descriptions to hire tutors, including candidates such as college students to work in-school and after school.
In the superintendent report, Dr. Kman said vocational reporting work produced news of roughly $1.5 million in additional funding to the district, compared with the $1.1 million he said earlier was budgeted. He also noted anticipated savings of approximately $550,000–$600,000 from changes to the health insurance plan. The superintendent said a staffing-study report will be presented and that the board is expected to ratify the tentative teacher contract at a special meeting next week.
Board members also received construction and operations updates: bleacher installation and finish work in the fieldhouse, audio-visual rigging completion, staff training on AV and scoreboard equipment, and an expected readiness for December events. Open enrollment for health insurance runs through Dec. 1, with Anthem and the state plan holding informational sessions.
What happens next: Staff will finalize Indiana Learns eligibility criteria with the state team and post tutor job descriptions; the board will consider ratification of the teacher agreement at next week’s special meeting.
