Council reviews library renovation quotes, seeks lower bids before finishing work

Council members discussed recent contractor proposals for the library renovation and agreed to collect updated, detailed bids before committing additional funds.

Members said they have received a range of quotes for the main renovation work, including at least one bid in the "20s" (thousands) and other higher estimates that need revision. Council members and staff reviewed remaining finish work—flooring, lighting and the need for a custom window and door to match the building’s historic character—and noted Towns and Glass is preparing a window quote. The group also discussed using salvaged or reproduction antique glass where appropriate.

Separately, the council reviewed items from a landmarks report identifying exterior trim and beadboard rot at the back of the building and near some window frames. A member suggested asking a local contractor (Rick) to perform targeted exterior repairs by the hour if he is willing.

Budget context was discussed: one speaker noted the town will have roughly $66,000 remaining for library completion in the near term, which influenced comments about prioritizing the most critical structural and exterior work first. Council directed staff to obtain revised contractor quotes and circulate them to members for further review.
