Council members discussed the municipal movie theater’s failing digital projector server during the April 6 meeting after staff reported the system will not boot.
A theater representative explained the industry has moved from 35 mm film to fully digital distribution and that studios control keys and downloads. “We can't get it to boot up anymore,” the presenter said, describing attempts to source repair estimates.
Members reviewed two options discussed at the meeting: repairing the existing server, estimated at about $4,100, or installing a refurbished system at roughly $9,400. Staff said the 2026 budget did not include replacement or repair funds for the server and noted the city currently receives no revenue from the theater.
Council asked staff to pursue additional estimates and to contact technicians who might provide repair or alternative solutions. One council member said staff should try to identify a repair option before pursuing a higher-cost purchase. The presenter noted the rapid pace of change in cinema distribution technology and said useful life of equipment could be 10–15 years, but that standards are shifting toward downloadable distribution systems.
No formal decision or appropriation was made; staff will report back with more detailed cost information and contractor recommendations before the council considers funding options.
