Sherburn sets March 11 deadline for applicants to fill vacant mayor seat

The Sherburn City Council voted Jan. 20 to solicit applicants to fill the vacancy in the mayor’s office and set a March 11 deadline for submissions.
City Clerk Andrea read guidance from the League of Minnesota Cities describing the council’s authority to appoint a replacement and citing relevant statutes, including Minn. Stat. §412.022 (vacancy appointments) and Minn. Stat. §471.46. The clerk said the council may appoint one of its members to the mayor’s office but that doing so would require backfilling the resulting council vacancy.
Council members voted to post the vacancy publicly (on the city’s Facebook page, post office bulletin boards and other local outlets) and to accept applications through March 11 so the council could act at its second March meeting. The clerk said she would provide an application process and a submission deadline to the public.
What’s next: Interested residents who meet eligibility requirements should submit materials to city hall by March 11; the council expects to consider and appoint a replacement at its March meeting.
