The Hanover Park Board unanimously approved a $10,567.61 budget to continue the FYCC Reading in the Park program at its Aug. 27 meeting.
Sandy Greninger, director of the Family, Youth and Community Connections (FYCC), said Hanover hosts eight of FYCC's 14 annual events and that attendance averages about 163 children per week, from stroller age to teens. She told the board that a reduced discount on the books FYCC distributes raised program costs and justified the requested budget increase. "If a child does not read over the summer months, they can be two (2) months behind returning to school in the fall," Greninger said.
City Clerk and Assistant to the City Administrator Jenny Peterson presented the budget request to the board. Chair Brandhorst moved to continue the program and approve the requested $10,567.61; the motion was seconded by Briana Rupenthal and carried unanimously.
Board members discussed the educational benefits of the program and book-distribution logistics. The approval directs the Park Board to include the amount in its 2025 planning and event allocations; final funding decisions for other board activities remain subject to forthcoming budget discussions.
The board adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
