Sherburn public works: one confirmed lead lateral found; city readies to apply for replacement funds

Sherburn’s public works department told the City Council on March 16 that a recent lead service-line inventory found one confirmed lead lateral within city service and 198 responses marked as unknown. Staff said letters were sent to 199 addresses and only one confirmed lead service line was identified.
Officials explained there are federal funding programs administered by the EPA and the Department of Health for lead-service-line replacement; the city must apply and act as host for the funds. Staff said a round of funding recently closed and the next application opportunity is expected to open in July (state fiscal-year timing). Staff estimated homeowners would not bear replacement costs directly and noted some programs can provide up to $25,000 per replacement, but that engineering review and grant administration are required because the money is federal.
Public works also discussed related infrastructure maintenance: curb-stop and main identification, potholing work to locate unknown laterals, a three-year seal-coating rotation for streets with interim crack sealing prioritized, lift-station controller maintenance after a blown fuse at a Temperance Lake Ridge pump, and planned well-pump inspections this year.
Council directed staff to continue inventory work, monitor funding opportunities, and update council as application windows and engineering requirements become clear.
