EDA explores buying former daycare building as council debates fire hall funding

The Spring Grove Economic Development Authority is exploring options to sell an EDA-owned building on Main Street and potentially purchase a former daycare building so that two new businesses could occupy downtown space, Mayor Bryan Wilhelmson reported Feb. 17.
Council Member Eric Ostern moved that the city pursue options to purchase the daycare property; Morgan Buckland seconded and the motion carried "all in favor." Council Member Trent Turner expressed concern about financing, saying he would like proceeds from the sale of the old fire hall to be allocated to the new fire hall, which he said had been the plan for several years. Elton suggested focusing on finishing one project at a time and recommended gathering more information before making further financial allocations. The council asked Elton to collect additional information for future consideration.
No formal purchase contract or funding appropriation was recorded in the minutes; the action taken was approval to investigate options. The council later directed staff to consider putting a city-owned rental property out for bid in approximately one year and to coordinate with the EDA on property matters.
