Chairman Al Siedow and other commissioners discussed the proposal after the contractor explained the intent to build two houses on the site. Commissioners noted that the area has an overlay allowing business on the bottom and housing on the top but that allowing houses on the lots in question would require rezoning. Commissioners raised a variety of considerations: some said the downtown area should retain commercial uses, others noted that allowing houses would provide immediate sewer and water hookups, and some emphasized property-owner rights.
The commission’s direction was to hold a public hearing so residents and stakeholders can comment formally and the commission can consider rezoning implications, including the overlay and the downtown business strategy. The clerk was asked to schedule the hearing and provide related materials to commissioners in advance.
The matter will return to a future meeting for a formal hearing and possible vote; the commission did not take a final vote on rezoning at this session.
