School committee clarifies interview rules, sets superintendent finalist schedule

The Salem School Committee spent a portion of its June 22 meeting refining procedures for upcoming superintendent finalist interviews and setting public-facing dates.
Members debated whether follow-up questions during finalist interviews are permissible and, if so, how many should be allowed and whether follow-ups must be identical for each candidate. Several members said follow-ups are important for clarifying answers; others asked legal counsel to confirm boundaries so the process remains fair. “I think it would be helpful to get from legal counsel a very specific guideline for us to have before the interviews,” one member said.
The committee confirmed finalists’ interview dates and times: Thomas Welch (July 6), Jorge Allen (July 7) and Andrew Bot (July 9), each at 6 p.m. in the school committee chambers; interviews will be streamed on SCTV and Zoom. The committee also set a tentative special meeting on July 15 at 7 p.m. for deliberation and potential vote on a finalist.
Administrators noted that the district’s public feedback form for finalists is available in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Haitian Creole and will close June 26 to allow staff time to summarize community responses for committee review.
No formal changes to the draft interview questions were adopted; the committee asked counsel to confirm whether follow-up questions are allowed and what constraints (if any) should apply prior to the scheduled interviews.
