Harris workshop considers counting outside training and changing EMS credit in SOP

At the Feb. 27 Harris Fire Department workshop, Treasurer Sue Riesing proposed changes to how the department counts year-end statistics and training credit. She suggested counting EMS calls in the total available calls rather than treating them as "extra credit," and recommended adding a percentage requirement for EMS training that could be lower than the current 25% requirement for fire and rescue.
The chiefs and council also discussed allowing training completed while a firefighter works at another department to count toward Harris requirements. The workshop indicated training at another department would count if a member is full- or part-time there, meets a proposed 60% threshold, and provides proof. Riesing recommended a tracking mechanism to confirm outside hours so the city can verify firefighters meet minimum training requirements.
Fire Chief Drew Chapeau said the department will change the SOP accordingly and bring proposed revisions to council for approval. No formal action was recorded at the workshop; the chiefs were directed to prepare SOP language reflecting the agreed counting rules and the proposed tracking method.
