The St. James City Council unanimously adopted Resolution 1122406 on Nov. 19 to establish a formal social media policy, following a recommendation from the League of Minnesota Cities.
Council members said the policy provides guidance on handling content on platforms the city uses (including Facebook), clarifies how data are stored and managed, and gives staff authority to remove derogatory comments or private information when appropriate. One textual correction was made in the draft to change an entry to identify the city manager by title.
The resolution passed by unanimous voice vote. The policy is intended to provide clarity for staff and the public about how city-managed social media will be moderated and how personal data referenced in comments will be handled.
