New AmeriCorps member introduced; council approves sign permit, hears department updates

Brianna Sanders introduced Grace Smith, who joined the city through the AmeriCorps Green Corps program on Sept. 23. "I'm super interested in sustainability, energy efficiency," Smith said, and said she will work on sidewalk infrastructure, Safe Routes to School and energy conservation projects.
The council approved Resolution 92408 to grant a sign permit to St. James Family Dentistry for 17 square feet of individual lettering on the north wall of 506 2nd Avenue South; the Planning Commission had recommended approval. No public comment was recorded on the permit.
In department updates, Bill (department head) said the fire department will host an open house Sunday and described a side‑by‑side ATV purchased with a $20,000 Union Pacific Railroad grant and $10,000 from relief funds; a skid unit with a 70‑gallon tank and pump will be added. Staff emphasized the equipment did not come from the city general fund.
Brianna also reminded the public that construction of a planned fourplex will begin soon and that the waiting list for units is expected to open in early 2025.
