Silver Plume seeks CPW support for mountain park; board flags illegal road damage and possible criminal investigation

Mac, speaking on behalf of Parks Commission member Cindy Neely, updated the board Dec. 9 on Silver Plume Mountain Park. He said the group had a positive meeting with Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), which saw a need and may be willing to pursue funding related to protection of a bighorn sheep herd, though the funding process is expected to move slowly.
The board also discussed an illegal road that has caused damage on or near park land. Mac and Mayor Lee Berenato said law enforcement indicated patrol officers on scene may have been unfamiliar with the terrain; they said the town may need the district attorney to investigate and, if warranted, pursue criminal charges so outside agencies will participate in mitigation. Mac and Berenato offered to contact a co-owner of the affected property to make them aware of the damage.
No formal agreement or funding was approved at the Dec. 9 meeting; trustees instructed follow-up outreach to CPW and to the land co-owner. The board listed an executive-session item about a possible land purchase for park expansion on the agenda but marked it N/A and did not hold an executive session.
