Representatives from Georgetown Loop Railroad, Austin Wright and Sam McCloskey, told the Silver Plume Board of Trustees on July 8 that a caboose restoration project will require kiln-appropriate drying and specific materials, with an estimated $12,000 in materials and roughly $50,000 total to complete the work by late summer 2025 if done properly.
The board voted to authorize up to $13,000 for the cost of materials, on a pay-as-invoiced basis. Chris Frey moved the funding approval, Marty Gitlin seconded, and the motion passed with all in favor. The board directed that invoices be submitted to the Town Clerk for review and approval before payment; the caboose is currently stored in the town shop and will remain there unless circumstances change.
Board members emphasized that, if the town pays for work, the project should be done correctly to avoid future shrinkage or moisture-related degradation. Sam McCloskey said the railroad would provide a detailed materials and labor cost list for the board to review; the board asked the railroad to bring firm numbers once available.
