Atkinson Conservation Commission reviews culvert, wetland violation, trails and community events

At its March 25 meeting the Commission heard updates on a grant-funded wildlife-friendly culvert project, an ongoing NHDES wetland-buffer violation at 135 Maple Avenue, a landowner survey extension for an encroachment, trail maintenance needs including a possible encroachment at Lakeside Drive, and scheduled community events such as a June 20 pollinator event.
The Atkinson Conservation Commission used its March 25 meeting to review several updates and plan near-term action on town conservation work.
Chair Bill Steele said the wildlife-friendly culvert project is in engineering finalization and that Town Administrator John Apple has been meeting with abutters about easements; easements will require Board of Selectmen approval and the project is largely grant-funded. Steele also reported that the NHDES continues to handle a prime-wetland buffer violation at 135 Maple Avenue and that the case remains open after a notice sent to the property owner a year ago.
The Commission granted additional time for a landowner survey in the reported "McPherson" encroachment matter. Members discussed multiple trail issues: storm-damaged areas at the Slade parking lot (which will be regraded), a large downed leaning tree at Sawyer (Alternate George Murray offered to address it), bat boxes in need of repair, tilting small bridges and drainage work. Commission members noted a possible encroachment where building materials and equipment associated with a new house at the end of Lakeside Drive appear to be placed on conservation land; Chair Steele said he will inspect the site to determine whether Code Enforcement should be notified.
Secretary Suzie Newman said the Pollinator Event is scheduled for June 20 at Freshwater Farm; the Commission discussed adding Memorial Day parade activities and a tree giveaway to the April 22 agenda. Member Nenart reported his daughter has resubmitted a Girl Scouts Gold Star project for council approval.
The meeting closed after routine administrative business and a 5-0-0 vote to adjourn at 8:03 p.m.
