Atkinson commission okays $450 purchase for KayaArm kayak-assist device

The Atkinson Conservation Commission voted 5-0-0 on March 25 to authorize up to $450 to purchase a KayaArm kayak-assist post to improve access at a town water launch. Member Jeff Nenart made the motion; Secretary Suzie Newman seconded.
Chair Bill Steele described two equipment options the commission had discussed earlier: a low-cost KayaArm (about $400 plus shipping) and a more expensive alternative near $2,000. Members favored trying the lower-cost KayaArm to provide an accessible aid with limited expense; members also discussed whether the device would be suitable for canoes and whether signage or a QR code should explain correct use.
Alternate Sandy Cannon raised the need for a railing at the site; Steele said he would evaluate the area before the May meeting and that either the Commission or a local contractor could install it. The purchase authorization covers the device and shipping; no installation contract was authorized at the March meeting.
The Commission recorded the motion and vote in the minutes; installation decisions and signage were left for future meetings.
