Etna Green council approves water-tower repairs, selects Apex for trash service and OKs municipal purchases

Etna Green — The Etna Green Town Council on Nov. 18 approved several operational contracts and municipal purchases, including repairs to the town’s water tower, a five-year trash-and-recycling agreement with Apex, and new chairs and tables for municipal meeting spaces.
Town staff presented a Lary Construction estimate for water-tower repairs and repainting listing specific line items — a vent ($7,500), exterior roof ladder ($2,000), overflow flapper valve ($2,500) and interior clean/touch-up ($14,190) — with a combined estimate cited around $25,190. Councilors said the work is routine maintenance necessary to remain in state compliance and voted to move forward.
Councilors then reviewed two trash-service proposals. Republic Services, the incumbent, proposed a $20-per-household monthly rate starting Jan. 1 with annual increases; Apex submitted a lower quote (recorded in the packet as $17.83/month). A council motion to accept Apex’s five-year contract passed by voice vote. A Republic representative in the room said the company was disappointed and asked where the bid was posted; a councilor responded that routine services of this type are not always competitively posted and defended the town’s procurement approach.
Council members also approved purchasing replacement folding chairs and eight new tables for town meeting rooms and authorized one additional conference table for an office. Councilors said year-end funds are available and that replacing worn furniture will ease setup and maintenance.
Other items discussed included park updates (paving completed, K21 Foundation donated a utility mule for park maintenance), a pending T-Mobile tornado siren grant for which award notices are expected at the end of November, and scheduling public input for the park’s phase-three plan in January. The meeting ended after routine old-business reports and recognition of volunteers.
Next steps: staff will finalize contracts and signatures and follow up on procurement paperwork and grant fund accounting at the next meeting.
