Etna Green OKs flow‑meter calibration, conditionally approves switch to liquid chlorine at sewer plant

The Etna Green Town Council approved calibration work at the municipal water plant and conditionally authorized moving toward a liquid chlorine disinfection system at the sewer plant, subject to engineering and Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDM) approvals.

An Ashberry representative reported that tablets in the sewer plant had been sticking and that a quoted conversion to a liquid system (two pumps plus initial chemical supply) would cost about $2,859.14 while yielding an estimated 30–40% reduction in disinfectant costs over time. Council members said the supply of tablets on hand should last through the season.

Separately, the council approved a $1,138 quote to calibrate the flow meter at the water plant after an engineering advisor warned that an uncalibrated meter could skew the town's water-loss audit by an estimated 20–30 percent.

Council debate focused on whether to authorize equipment purchase immediately or wait for regulatory and engineering clearance. The council ultimately voted to proceed with Ashberry's work plan and to have equipment staged, with explicit requirements that no purchases occur until an engineering review is complete and IDM confirms the change in disinfection process is allowable.

Next steps: staff will seek an on-call engineering review, submit required materials to IDM for process changes, and return with written engineering recommendations before any purchases are made.
