Edgewood fire and police outline summer safety programs and National Night Out plans

Edgewood’s fire and police departments outlined summer community-safety programs and events, including a free smoke-alarm installation program, a Water Wars parade and National Night Out activities.
Jess, public information officer for the Edgewood Fire Department, said the department will install and replace smoke alarms free for town residents but must perform the installations themselves per state rules. She also previewed a family-oriented Water Wars parade tentatively set for July 25, with firefighters riding trucks, water balloons and some supervised hose activities for children; additional details will be posted on the department’s Facebook page.
Jess also described volunteer opportunities: the department is accepting Edgewood residents to apply as daytime ambulance drivers; applicants must complete emergency vehicle operation and hazardous-materials awareness training before driving.
Police updates included an introduction of Officer Carly Kaido, who said she grew up in the area and is returning after service with IMPD. The department reported 68 calls for service in May, 24 traffic stops and one OWI arrest. Police and fire staff said National Night Out will take place Aug. 4 from 5–8 p.m., with free food, activities, a planned Stat Flight helicopter display and giveaways; organizers said they were pursuing a celebrity guest but had not finalized a name.
Officer Kaido said she plans to start a bike patrol; council members discussed bike procurement and possible partnerships with local vendors and clubs to support patrols and giveaways. The departments asked residents to watch their respective Facebook pages for finalized event details and registration opportunities.
The council encouraged community participation and noted many activities are free to residents.
