Bolton fire chief reports call volume, apparatus issues and role in new regional training campus

Chief Bruce Dixon told the Bolton Fire Commission on Dec. 11 that the department responded to 35 emergency calls since the previous meeting, bringing year-to-date responses to 507 (the department logged 540 calls for all of 2016).
Dixon said capital budget requests for 2018-2019 were submitted to Administrative Officer Joyce Stille and that he is compiling figures for the town's budget process ahead of the Dec. 28 town hall. He reported he is working with Spartan and US Tanker to correct several issues with the department's new tanker and said more information will be provided as the vendor work continues.
The chief noted officers have implemented a new Duty Officer Schedule. He also said mutual aid run cards were updated to reflect apparatus recently acquired by neighboring departments.
Dixon described a governor-approved bond, passed Dec. 5, 2017, to fund a new Eastern Connecticut Fire School training campus in Willimantic; the design includes a burn building, tower, maintenance facility, extrication area, driver-training area, drafting area and classroom and administrative space. He said he helped lay out the overall campus design at the request of the school. The department also took part in local holiday and community events and assisted a state police toy drive.
The commission did not take separate votes on the chief's operational updates; the discussion informed budget deliberations recorded later in the meeting.
