Tower council approves local licenses, authorizes propane bids and donates to Old Settlers Picnic

At its May 11 meeting the City of Tower council approved routine business items affecting local commerce and events. Acting Mayor Joe Morin moved to approve annual cigarette licenses for local businesses and to approve liquor licenses for Good Ol' Days, D'ericks and Benchwarmers for the July 1, 2026–June 30, 2027 licensing year; Councilor Anderson seconded and both motions carried unanimously.
The council authorized the clerk/treasurer to solicit bids for 1‑, 2‑ and 3‑year propane service contracts and to return bid results to a future meeting for consideration. Councilor Anderson moved the authorization; Councilor VanDeVoort seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
The council appointed Acting Mayor Morin to serve as the city’s Noxious Weed Inspector (motion by Councilor Anderson; seconded by Councilor Norby) and heard that Marshall Helmberger volunteered to assist with weed identification. The clerk, deputy clerk and public works staff coordinated with Jolene Moravitz of the Lake Vermilion Events Board to recruit volunteers for July 4 parade barrier staffing and post‑event cleanup. Finally, the council agreed to donate $300 to Breitung Township’s Old Settlers Picnic on July 18 and noted the intent to include the donation in the 2027 budget.
All these items were approved by unanimous vote and are primarily administrative steps to support local businesses, events and public works operations.
