Heidelberg notified of noninvasive geophysical survey by Iron Range Exploration

Iron Range Exploration, LLC told the City of Heidelberg on Oct. 6 that it will conduct a geophysical survey along 181st Avenue, 320th Street and other locations in southern Minnesota.
Clerk Tracy Prochaska said the company, based in Denver, explained the work will be noninvasive: trucks driving on pavement will emit controlled sound waves while temporary roadside sensors collect data. No boring, digging or surface disturbance will occur, and the company said it had obtained permits through Le Sueur County. ‘‘The survey operates similarly to an X‑ray,’’ Prochaska said, summarizing the company’s explanation that the mapping is intended to identify subsurface geology and potential hydrogen reserves in southern Minnesota and northern Iowa.
Council members did not take action on the notice during the meeting; Prochaska said she contacted the company after the meeting to obtain clarity. The notice arrived shortly before the meeting at 4:58 PM, the clerk reported.
The city’s role, as described at the meeting, was informational: the company notified the city and county permitting was handled through Le Sueur County. No digging or right‑of‑way work was reported to be planned by the company at this time.
The council’s next regular meeting is scheduled for Nov. 3, 2025; the clerk did not announce any additional required city approvals related to the survey at this meeting.
