Trimont council approves League collaboration, retains Flaherty & Hood as employment counsel

The Trimont City Council on April 21 agreed to participate in a collaboration with the League of Minnesota Cities and to retain Flaherty & Hood as the city's employment attorney. The City Attorney recommended both steps as part of improving legal support for the city and advised adopting a formal Conflict of Interest policy.
The motion to retain Flaherty & Hood passed 4-1; Council Member Bradford Flohrs cast the lone no vote. A subsequent motion approved the Mayor, Kevin Kuehl, as the city's contact for the employment attorney (5-0). Council members said the retained counsel and League collaboration should strengthen the city's capacity to handle employment and governance issues.
The City Attorney's recommendations followed the auditors' review of the 2024 audit, which highlighted disclosure and endorsement issues. Council did not adopt a written Conflict of Interest policy at the meeting but discussed next steps to prepare policy language and coordinate with the League or outside counsel.
The council took the votes during routine agenda actions and noted that further legal and policy work would be scheduled as required.
