Hammond board approves road maintenance bid schedule, personnel changes and a package of routine permits and hearings

The Hammond Board of Public Safety on Jan. 29 approved several routine but substantive items, including scheduling and permits for public works projects, Fire Department personnel actions and a package of hearings and license renewals.
Engineering presented the 2026 road maintenance program advertising dates—Feb. 5 and Feb. 12, 2026—with a bid opening on Feb. 26, 2026. Engineering said the work will include crack sealing, seal coating and asphalt patching and that bids are being updated to reflect current prices; the board approved the schedule by voice vote.
The board also approved personnel actions requested by the Fire Chief (Bernard Gazolia): Paramedic Jeremy Olsen was listed for reassignment to the rank of private and Brandon Deals was promoted to the rank of paramedic, effective Jan. 26, 2026. The controller's office requested and the board approved renewal of Buffalo Wild Wings Grill and Bar’s amusement devices license.
Other approved items included five right-of-way permits (four for NIPCO gas service to residences and one for AT&T to connect to a manhole near the Lake County courthouse on Russell), a plat of survey for Blackstone edition, and an intergovernmental transfer of property at 952 State Street to the Hammond Redevelopment Commission/Department (board members noted a typographical error in the draft resolution and staff corrected it before approval).
The board approved Addendum A to a regional health systems agreement providing medical services at the Hammond Police Department jail; one board member abstained from that vote, citing employment at the police department. The board set hearings for Feb. 12, 2026 for multiple late-license matters and set a status date of March 26, 2026 for the matter at 4934 Ash.
