Raymond Thomas, vice president of A1 Affordable Signs, told the Hammond Board of Public Works and Safety that he stopped operating the business after suffering skin cancer and related surgery in 2024 and that no business activity or deliveries had occurred at the address since August 2024.
Thomas said he retained equipment on the premises while he builds a pole barn at his home and asked that late fees be waived because the business was not active. Lisa, a city staff member from the controller’s office, said she provided Thomas a closure form and that staff were comfortable waiving the late fees given his circumstances and the office’s ability to resolve the matter once the closure form is submitted.
The board voted to waive the late fees and advised Thomas that if he resumes business before June he could pay the underlying license fees and then file the closure form later, or alternatively return the closure form now to finalize the matter. Thomas said he would wait at the meeting to obtain paperwork and pay any required fees if needed.
The board’s vote waived late‑fee penalties but required the standard license or closure paperwork to be completed to finalize the status of the business license.
