County Administrator Kelly Schroeder reviewed materials from a May 26 Committee of the Whole meeting, including a statewide jail map, a 2024 Jail Consolidation Study and a draft outreach letter to neighboring counties. Commissioner Roger Nelson said that, as lead county, Pine should request additional cost-per-resident data and outstanding bond balances and terms from counties that are interested.
Commissioner Matt Ludwig moved to authorize the Board Chair to sign and send letters inviting Aitkin, Benton, Carlton, Chisago, Isanti, Kanabec, Mille Lacs and Morrison counties to participate in discussions about jail operations and regional collaboration. Commissioner Steve Hallan seconded; the motion carried 5-0.
The board did not adopt any specific consolidation plan or commit to facility changes. The approved action authorizes outreach and information‑gathering to determine whether a regional approach is feasible.
