Union City police chief says new applicant unreachable; council will continue search for one part-time officer

Police Chief David Pernice said at the Aug. 27 Union City Borough Council meeting that a candidate approved at a prior meeting has not responded to repeated outreach and he will assume the person is no longer interested.
"I have tried to make contact but have had no luck. I am assuming he is no longer interested," Pernice said, and added he plans to reach out to the hiring consortium and the Civil Service Commission to set up oral exams and send letters to candidates.
Pernice told council he would prefer hiring two part-time officers but noted only one position was approved at the prior meeting; council agreed to continue the search for one part-time officer. No formal vote or change to staffing levels was recorded beyond that direction.
The chief said there are 32 candidates on the consortium list and that he will proceed with examinations and outreach. The council did not provide additional funding or alter the previously approved position at the meeting.
