Tama County board approves permits, new sheriff funds, reappointment and $284,087.20 in claims

At its June 15 meeting the Tama County Board of Supervisors approved a package of routine administrative and financial items.
Interim County Engineer Nick Amelon recommended the board sign two utility permits submitted by Poweshiek Water Association; the board approved the permits on a motion by Supervisor Curt Kupka and seconded by Supervisor David Turner. The board also heard from Jake Buchanan, Tama County Economic Development Director, who presented photos and selected Bob Kienzle as the winner of the county’s economic development photo contest.
The board approved reappointing Kevin Eikamp to the Tama County Veterans Affairs Board for a three‑year term ending June 30, 2029 (motion by Curt Hilmer, seconded by Heather Knebel; unanimous vote).
Maintenance Supervisor Dirk Henle requested that unused maintenance budget funds be transferred into the county’s capital improvement fund to pay for future tuckpointing on the courthouse and HVAC needs; the board directed that unused maintenance funds be transferred to the capital improvement fund. No amounts were specified in the minutes.
County Auditor Karen Rohrs requested creation of two special funds for the sheriff’s office — one for the "Be the Example Award" and one for a K9 program — and asked that the treasurer open bank accounts at WCF Financial Bank for those funds. The board approved creating the funds, allowing the treasurer to open accounts, and authorized the following signers on the new accounts: Tama County Auditor, Tama County Treasurer, Tama County Treasurer Tax Assistant, Tama County Sheriff, and Tama County Chief Deputy Sheriff.
On a motion by Supervisor David Turner, seconded by Supervisor Curt Kupka, the board approved claims for payment totaling $284,087.20; the motion passed unanimously.
Public comments were later heard from Laura Wilson, a speaker identified only as Jessica, and Karen Murty. The board adjourned at 9:37 a.m.
