Council approves conditional use for standalone EV fast-charging station on Hwy 17 with safety conditions

Richmond Hill council on March 3 approved a conditional-use application from iONNA to build a standalone Level 3 DC fast-charging station at 4720 Highway 17, subject to conditions addressing on-site fire safety and emergency shutoffs.
Staff and the Planning Commission recommended approval and the public hearing drew no speakers for or against the project. Applicant Andres Villacres described revisions to the site plan that moved access away from Ponderosa Road and located the building closer to U.S. 17. Council members asked questions about fire safety, emergency shutoffs, and site maintenance.
Fire Chief Greene told the council the department is equipped to respond to electric vehicle fires using a blanket-and-aerosol suppression kit. Villacres and the applicant team confirmed that emergency shutoffs, conspicuous emergency-stop button placement, and on-site fire blankets would be coordinated with the Fire Department during the building-permit process.
Councilmember Van Hunter moved to approve the conditional-use application with conditions requiring on-site fire blankets, emergency shutoffs as applicable, and conspicuous emergency contact information; Councilmember Kevin Bowes seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.
Next steps: the applicant will proceed to building-permit coordination with the Fire Department and staff, implementing the conditions set by the council.
